Click here to advertise on CatholicCulture.org Religious freedom ‘highly restricted’ in 75% of nations CWN - December 12, 2013 Free eBook: Liturgical Year 2013-2014, Vol. 1 Writing for Reuters, two members of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom noted that “75% of the world’s population now lives in countries in which this freedom is highly restricted.” Mary Ann Glendon (a Catholic) and Katrina Lantos Swett (a Mormon) said that many of the nations that repress religious freedom – including Myanmar, Egypt, Iran, and Pakistan – signed the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which enshrined the right to religious freedom in international law. “The United States and the entire world community have an enormous stake in upholding the UDHR’s human rights principles — including religious freedom,” they concluded. “It is time to reaffirm the declaration by holding its signatories accountable.” Additional sources for this story Some links will take you to other sites, in a new window.
